Terms and conditions
These terms govern your use of the Broadsheet website, browser extension, iOS app, Android app, and share extensions (together, the “service”). Broadsheet is operated by Marginal Utility in the United Kingdom. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to these terms.
Who may use Broadsheet
You must be at least 13 years old and legally able to enter into these terms. If you use Broadsheet for an organization, you confirm that you have authority to bind that organization. You must provide accurate account information and keep your sign-in credentials secure.
The service
Broadsheet lets you save, extract, organize, and read material from the web. Features may include imports, feeds, highlights, notes, email digests, offline storage, and article change tracking. Some features require a paid Supporter subscription. We may improve, replace, or discontinue features, but we will give reasonable notice where a material change significantly reduces a paid service.
Your content and third-party material
You retain any rights you hold in URLs, notes, highlights, imports, and other material you submit. You give us a limited, non-exclusive license to host, copy, process, and transmit that material only as needed to provide, secure, and improve Broadsheet. This license ends when the material is deleted, except for temporary backups and legal retention requirements.
Articles and other web content remain the property of their authors and publishers. Broadsheet does not give you rights to copy or use third-party material beyond those you already have. You are responsible for saving and using content lawfully, including content behind a login or paywall. A source site may change, block extraction, or remove material, and Broadsheet cannot guarantee that every page can be saved accurately.
Acceptable use
You must not use Broadsheet to:
- break the law or infringe another person’s rights;
- share, publish, or commercially redistribute unauthorized copies of saved material;
- bypass access controls or use credentials you are not authorized to use;
- upload malware or interfere with the service or another user;
- probe, scrape, or overload the service outside its intended interfaces; or
- use the service to build a competing content archive or extraction service.
We may limit requests, remove unlawful material, or suspend an account where reasonably necessary to prevent harm, comply with law, or enforce these terms. We will normally explain the reason and provide a chance to appeal unless doing so would create a security or legal risk.
Free and paid plans
Current plan features and prices are shown before checkout. Supporter subscriptions renew monthly until canceled. Stripe processes payment and provides the billing portal. You authorize Stripe to charge the payment method associated with your subscription on each renewal date. Taxes may be added where required.
You can cancel at any time through the billing portal. Cancellation stops future renewals, and paid features normally remain available until the end of the paid billing period. Except where the law requires otherwise, payments already made are not refundable merely because you did not use the service. Nothing in these terms limits statutory cancellation, refund, or consumer rights that cannot be excluded.
We may change a subscription price by giving reasonable advance notice. A price change will apply no earlier than your next renewal after the notice period, and you may cancel before it takes effect.
Account cancellation and deletion
You may stop using Broadsheet or cancel a paid subscription at any time. Deleting your Marginal Utility account triggers deletion of your Broadsheet data, subject to limited backup, payment, security, and legal records described in the privacy policy. Export anything you want to keep before deleting your account.
Availability and backups
We aim to keep Broadsheet available and protect stored data, but no online service is uninterrupted or loss-proof. Features may be unavailable during maintenance or because of events outside our reasonable control. Keep an export of material you cannot afford to lose. The service is provided “as is” and “as available”, subject to rights and warranties that the law does not allow us to exclude.
Liability
We do not exclude or limit liability where doing so would be unlawful, including liability for fraud, fraudulent misrepresentation, or death or personal injury caused by negligence. If you are a consumer, your mandatory statutory rights remain unaffected.
To the extent permitted by law, we are not responsible for losses that were not reasonably foreseeable when you agreed to these terms, for business losses arising from consumer use, or for third-party sites and content. If you use Broadsheet for business purposes, our total liability arising from the service in any 12-month period is limited to the greater of £100 and the amount you paid us for the service in that period.
Open-source software
Broadsheet’s source code is made available under the license in its public repository. That license governs your use of the source code. These terms govern your use of the hosted service.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms to reflect changes to the service, law, or security requirements. We will give reasonable notice of material changes through the service or by email. If you do not agree to a change, you may stop using the service and cancel before it takes effect. Continued use after the effective date means you accept the updated terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. If you are a consumer, you keep any mandatory protections of the country where you live, and you may bring proceedings in any court available to you under applicable consumer law. Otherwise, the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction.
